Sensory Friendly Mondays
We invite you to come enjoy the Johnson County Museum and KidScape in a comfortable, low-sensory environment. This limited-occupancy session is designed specifically for children with sensory processing differences and Autism Spectrum Disorders. We welcome visitors of all abilities and museum experience. It is held the first Monday of the month from 9:00 a.m. to noon.
During sensory friendly times, changes are made to the museum’s exhibit spaces, including KidScape, with the intention of helping make the museum more accessible and enjoyable for children with ASD and sensory challenges.
These changes include:
Offering sensory bags to be used during your visit
Offering a sensory-friendly map, visual checklist, and social narrative guides to the museum and KidScape
Offering additional signage to assist in navigation and aid in understanding Museum rules and expectations
Having fewer guests than normal
Having a designated quiet space

From the theatre: "Everyone deserves the chance to enjoy an experience at the movie theater, but we understand that certain sensitivities can make this challenging. B&B Theatres, however, is committed to creating environments where cinema lovers of all types can watch a movie in comfort and without fear of judgment or rebuke.
In order to better accommodate our guests with varying levels of physical or mental challenge, we host Sensory Friendly viewings in association with particular films. These showtimes feature brighter auditorium lighting, lower audio levels, and are open and available for folks that may have trouble in conventional cinema settings."

From the theatre: "The Twilight Theatre is pleased to be the first theatre to offer sensory-friendly screenings for the residents of southwest Kansas. At the time of publication of this post, the nearest theatre to offer such programming is located one hundred miles away in Wichita.
Sensory-Friendly Screenings are geared towards children and adults with autism or special needs and their families. The volume is turned down, and the lights will remain dim, but not dark. Attendees are free to roam the aisles, make noise, sing, move in an environment that is safe, friendly and free from judgement. Some families with small children enjoy attending these screenings because they don’t have to worry about disturbing their neighbors if their kids get restless. These afternoon weekend showings are a perfect opportunity for families who are traveling, some up to fifty miles, and it won’t break the bank since all matinee shows are $5 admission at the Twilight Theatre.

Free Dance Therapy Classes for Children with Developmental Disabilities!
This dance class is designed for elementary and middle schoolers with any intellectual, developmental, or sensory impairments! Our beginner-level dance and movement classes currently take place through Zoom and provide a fun outlet for children to let out energy and meet new people. The free class is also designed to help refine and improve things like motor skills, concentration, social/communication abilities, and general happiness.

Sensory Friendly showings provide families with varying abilities the opportunity to enjoy a family friendly film where kids can be kids in a safe and accepting environment. The auditoriums are made comfortable by brighter lights and the sound level is turned down. The audience is encouraged to be themselves and interact with the movie, while having fun without the worry of disturbing others. Dance, sing and enjoy the show!!!

Sensory Friendly Screenings
A pillar of SMG’s Outreach since 2003, our monthly Special Needs Screenings are designed for families raising children with special needs. Special Needs Screenings are shown with the lights up and the volume lowered and children are free to move around, talk, or even dance in the aisles during the movie.
The sensory friendly screenings are free for children with special needs and their siblings. Adult tickets are available at before-noon price. There are no advance ticket sales. Parental guidance is always suggested.
Special Needs Screenings are shown at 11:00am at all SMG locations except EpiCentre. SMG Downey, Monrovia and Redlands look forward to offering our special needs screening program in the near future. We are currently in process of installing new seating and will subsequently undergo remodeling to our full concept. These locations will offer special needs screenings as soon as this work has been completed.

Wings for Autism®/Wings for All® are airport “rehearsals” specially designed for individuals with autism spectrum disorders and individuals with intellectual/developmental disabilities. The programs are designed to alleviate the stress that families who have a child with autism or intellectual/developmental disabilities experience when flying. It provides families the opportunity to practice entering the airport, obtaining boarding passes, going through security and boarding a plane. Airport, airline, Transportation Security Administration professionals, and other personnel also have the opportunity to observe, interact, and deliver their services in a structured learning environment.
