Boo Just For You at Elmood Zoo!
I am so grateful for the places that offer sensory friendly events for families like ours. I spend hours every week trying to find activities across the country (to add to our Sensory Friendly resource), so I know first-hand how under-served many cities are. I am especially thankful that where we live is plentiful with opportunities for special needs families to just have fun.
Recently, we were lucky enough to have an opportunity to participate in the Boo Just For You event at Elmwood Park Zoo in Norristown, PA. Elmwood Park Zoo is an amazing place for special needs families in that it is a certified autism center!
Here's a little info from their website:
Guests with Developmental Disabilities and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
In May of 2018 Elmwood Park Zoo became the first zoo in the world to earn certification as a Certified Autism Center. The designation, given by the International Board of Credentialing and Continuing Education Standards (IBCCES), is awarded to organizations who have completed a training and review process with the goal to better serve individuals with autism and other sensory needs.
Boo Just For You was held after the zoo had closed to the public for the day and had a limited number of attendees, making it a very quiet, and accessible experience. No loud noises, music, crowds, waiting, etc. All the kids were provided trick-or-treat bags and there were treat stations along the way. There were also little sensory activities and games, and of course, the animals!
This event was done very well and I would absolutely do it again if they offer it next year.
The best part for Little Dude was the percussion area, followed by the playground there. He doesn't quite get into the animals yet, but he loves a drum and a swing!
