Getting By with a Little Help from Our Friends
Our local NPR affiliate recently shared this article and it has some basic, yet very helpful, tips on supporting parents of autistic children. I realize this information may be a little too basic for you autism parents who have been around the block, but for those who are new to this ride and are just trying to keep their head above water, it might be exactly what you need. Sometimes, it’s hard to ask for help (guilty!) and sometimes you just don’t know what help you need.
I especially love the section on planning. I am, by nature, a planner. An extreme planner, if you ask my husband. But something as simple as having a quiet space available, maybe some earplugs and a quick social story can make all the difference in the world for a special needs family attending a community event.
