Magik Theatre

Sensory-Friendly Performance: Carmella Full of Wishes

Sensory-friendly performances are designed to create a welcoming environment for people who are on the autism spectrum or may have sensory sensitivities.  The integrity of the performance remains the same, while production elements are modified to accommodate individuals with sensory needs allowing families and friends of those with autism or other disabilities the opportunity to enjoy an authentic performance experience together.  Our goal is a relaxed and judgment-free theatre experience where audiences can move around or take breaks in the lobby, sing or talk during the performance, or wear sunglasses in the auditorium. We welcome you!

Carmela Full of Wishes is a hopeful play based on the acclaimed book of the same title by Newbery Medal and Caldecott Honor-winning author Matt de la Peña and illustrator Christian Robinson.  On her birthday, young Carmela wakes up thrilled to finally be old enough to join her big brother on their family errands. As they travel through their neighborhood, Carmela stumbles upon a lone dandelion growing in the pavement. But before she can blow away its white fluff, her brother reminds her to make a wish. With a heart full of hopes and dreams, Carmela wishes for a candy machine, a fancy bed for Mamí like the ones at the hotel where she works, and most importantly, for Papí to come back home soon. Then her dandelion is crushed before she can make her biggest wish. Can her brother help her to believe in the power of wishes once again? Join us on this journey celebrating family, dreamers, and the power of hope found in the most unexpected places.  RECOMMENDED FOR AGES 5 + ESTIMATED RUN TIME: Approximately 60 minutes

Sensory Friendly Hours

Thinkery seems to have recurring, scheduled, sensory friendly hours. We recommend checking their website or calling to see about upcoming events.

From their website (about an April 2018 event):  Thinkery is committed to providing an accessible and interactive experience for all. During Sensory Friendly Hours, Thinkery extends a special invitation to learners with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) or other special needs to explore Thinkery with their families.

A typical visit to Thinkery can be challenging for those who feel overwhelmed by large crowds and excessive stimuli. In acknowledgment of this, the galleries will be modified to reduce extra stimuli and ticket sales will be limited to reduce crowding.

In addition to exclusive museum access, Thinkery partners with amazing organizations to provide fun, hands-on activities and tailored information:

  • FREE admission, generously sponsored by Variety Texas.

  • FREE breakfast tacos, generously provided by Hat Creek Burger Company.

  • 8:30 am & 9:30 am: Shining Stars – Theatre arts and improv games with Joshua's Stage

  • 9 am story time with Spark Learning's energetic team of ABA therapists.

  • Let’s dance and move! Stop by for a quick dance session for individuals of all abilities with 2dance2dream.

Their website also offers floor maps and social story PDFs to help you prepare.
